What is a plunge pool?

A plunge pool, also known as a dipping pool, is essentially a small above-ground swimming pool. Plunge pools typically range from 4 to 7 metres long, and about 2 to 3 metres wide. Combined with some swim jets, they are generally big enough for an adult to practice some light swimming or complete hydrotherapy exercise.

So, while you may not be able to do Olympic laps in a plunge pool, it’s perfect for entertaining or cooling off in the summer. Their smaller water volume also makes them easy to cool in warmer months or heat for year-round use.

And if you just want to sit back and unwind, you can do that too. Simply set the water to your ideal temperature and enjoy.

What is the difference between a plunge pool and a regular pool?

Plunge pools are significantly smaller than regular pools and are similar to swim spas, though typically with fewer jets and pumps. Many also double as spa pools or hot tubs, offering heated, recirculating water and light massage features.

They’re also more affordable, especially above ground. Unlike inground swimming pools, which require excavation and construction, above-ground plunge pools are pre-built and simply fixed in place, making installation faster, cleaner, and more cost-effective.

How deep is a plunge pool?

Plunge pools in Australia typically range between 1.2 and 1.7m deep, designed so that adults can be comfortably immersed.

We offer different capacity sizes at mySpa Sydney. Our smaller models are deep enough to comfortably fit 4 adults, while our larger option can fit 8 adults.

How much does a plunge pool cost?

Plunge pools are typically much cheaper than swimming pools, though the cost can vary depending on the quality and type of installation. You can expect a plunge pool to cost between $20k and $32k for the unit, with installation prices varying according to the site and complexity.

The larger the pool, the greater the cost will be. Furthermore, you should expect to pay extra for an in-ground installation, as this requires much more extensive earthworks.

What’s involved in installing a plunge pool?

An above-ground plunge pool can be installed very easily. Some ground preparation is usually required, but it can be carried out quickly to ensure minimal disruption to your life and home.

When you buy from mySpa Sydney, we can take care of the entire installation process for you. That means we can arrange a concrete slab prior to delivery, and handle everything from cranes for hard-to-access sites, electrical work and even any decking or landscaping you may be interested in.

So, is a plunge pool worthwhile?

Whether or not a plunge pool is worth your money depends on what you want from your pool. If you’re looking for a spacious, high-octane swim spa that can keep up with your intensive competitive swim training then a plunge pool might not be the right option.

But if you’re looking for a pool that you can use to keep fit with regular swimming exercise at home, that also doubles as a place for you to relax and entertain friends, then a plunge pool is a fantastic choice with a smaller footprint and a competitive price point.
