Let’s break down swim spa dimensions

All mySpa Sydney swim spas maintain a standard width of approximately 2.3m (2290mm), with varying lengths from 4.0m to 6.0m. This standardisation makes planning easier, as you'll only need to account for length differences when measuring your available space.

So, let’s break down how much available space you need around your swim spa.

Actual dimensions vs. installation footprint

When planning for your swim spa, you'll need to consider more than just the physical dimensions of the unit itself:

  • Required clearance: NSW regulations require at least 600mm clearance around all sides of the swim spa for maintenance access, though we recommend 1m wherever possible to be safe.
  • Service accessibility: Technicians need proper access to all sides of the swim spa
  • Boundary considerations: Maintain at least 1m space between your swim spa and boundary fencing, and 1.5m from drainage easements
  • Sydney Water compliance: Keep 1m clearance from Sydney Water assets like manholes
  • Structural considerations: Maintain 600mm distance from retaining walls

Installing a swim spa can be a major project. Whether you plan on doing some of the landscaping yourself, or need an expert team to do it for you, we’re here to help.

We provide a network of expert contractors and end-to-end support with CDC and DA compliance. Chat to mySpa Sydney about your vision, and we’ll show you how to make it happen.

"When choosing the location for your swim spa, remember that when filled, it can weigh upwards of 7-10 tonnes. Your concrete slab needs to be appropriately engineered, and you need to consider how service technicians will access the equipment." – Denis Linehan, mySpa Sydney

Swim spa considerations for different properties

Here are some general guidelines for choosing a swim spa depending on how much available space you have:

Urban Sydney properties

For typical inner-city Sydney terraces or apartments with limited outdoor space:

  • Consider 4.0m swim spa models that maximise functionality in limited space
  • Ensure adequate crane access for installation
  • Make sure you have body corporate approval for apartment installations
  • Remember that a swim spa will require a 150mm reinforced concrete slab

"We've successfully installed swim spas on apartment balconies in Sydney, but it requires careful planning. The structural capacity of the building and clearances for craning the unit into place are critical considerations," – Denis Linehan, mySpa Sydney.

Suburban Sydney properties

For larger suburban Sydney properties with decent garden space:

  • Mid-size or large swim spas (4.5m-6.0m) provide optimal family enjoyment
  • Consider positioning for views, privacy, and shade
  • Plan for complementary landscaping to enhance the space
  • A larger swim spa often adds more value to your property

Rural properties

For properties with plenty of land to work with:

  • Larger 6.0m swim spa models can become a central entertainment feature
  • Consider proximity to power and water connections
  • Plan for potential weather protection like pergolas

Swim spa size FAQs

What's the smallest swim spa available?

Our most compact swim spa is the mySwimgym at 3960 × 2290 × 1340mm. This model still provides excellent functionality while requiring minimal space.

How much space do I need around a swim spa?

NSW regulations require at least 600mm clearance for access and maintenance, but we recommend 1m wherever possible for optimal service access and usability.

Can a swim spa be installed on a deck?

It depends. The deck must be specifically engineered to support the weight of the filled swim spa (7-10 tonnes). We recommend that customers build a deck around the swim spa instead, which creates the appearance of an integrated installation while allowing the swim spa to sit on a concrete slab.

What size swim spa is best for swimming?

For serious swimmers, we recommend at least a 4.5m model like the myLapSwim, with 6.0m models like myWorkout being ideal for those with competitive swimming experience. The longer the swim spa, the more natural your swimming stroke can be against the resistance jets.

Does a larger swim spa cost significantly more to run?

Not necessarily. With mySpa Sydney’s energy-efficient SpaNET control systems and Eco Cube heat pumps, the operational cost difference between sizes is often minimal, especially when using smart features like sleep timers and power-saving modes.
