Chemicals from hardware stores are often too harsh for your spa pool, hardening your water and even damaging your pumps.
Other commonly used chemicals in the spa industry, like bromite, can be damaging to the skin — not ideal for a relaxing hydrotherapy experience!
At mySpa Sydney, we offer top-quality essential spa chemicals that won’t damage your spa or your skin. Here are the three chemicals we always recommend:
- Sanitiser: Sanitisers kill bacteria, fungi, and other germs that linger in water and can harm your health.
- Rapid shock: Shocking, also known as oxidising your spa, breaks down contaminants like dead skin, sweat, makeup, and even bugs, and releases them back into the air. These are things that would otherwise linger and build up in the water.
- Balancer: These chemicals balance your spa’s pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness to ensure the water is gentle on your skin and eyes.
If you’re looking into higher-quality chemicals for the first time or simply need a top-up, we offer fast delivery for Sydney customers. Just give us a call or visit our showroom to place your order and arrange delivery.
How To Use Spa Chemicals For Maintenance
To start your spa, you’ll need to balance and sanitise the water.
First, add Spa Alkalinity Up (Sodium Bicarbonate), which should balance the pH of your water to 7.2-7.8 and alkalinity levels to 80-120.
Once your pH and alkalinity levels are within range, add Spa Sanitiser following the directions on the package to kill any bacteria that may be present.
Add Spa Dichlor Sanitiser (Chlorine) to ensure your spa stays clear of bacteria at the end of each day's use. If the water is still cloudy after 8 hours, we recommend dosing again to kill any remaining germs.
Those are the basics of starting and maintaining a spa, but you’ll also need additional spa maintenance regularly to keep everything running smoothly.
Routine Spa Maintenance
You’ll need to do two things every week to maintain your spa: alkalinity checks and spa shocks.
Alkalinity check:
- If the spa alkalinity is low, add Spa Alkalinity Up (Sodium Bicarbonate) to the water. The lower the initial reading is, the more you’ll need to add to get to an optimal level.
- If the spa alkalinity is high, do not add any chemicals to the water. Instead, remove 10% of the water from the spa and replace it with tap water. Since tap water is acidic, it will help to bring down the total alkalinity of the spa.
Spa shock: Remove your spa’s cover, turn the pumps on high and open venturi valves to oxygenate water. Then, add Spa Shock. Once the shock has been added, avoid getting in the spa for at least two hours.
The chemicals you add to your spa will inevitably build up over time. To avoid a buildup of chemical byproducts, you should replace the water quarterly (once every three months). You should also install new filters once per year.
Spa Chemicals FAQs
What chemicals do you need to start a spa?
The startup procedure for a spa involves two chemicals: a balancer that balances pH, alkalinity, and hardness, and a sanitiser that kills bacteria.
What chemicals do I need for a hot tub?
To set up and maintain a hot tub, you’ll need three primary chemicals: a pH/alkalinity balancer, a sanitising chemical such as chlorine, and a shock.
In what order do you add chemicals to a spa?
First, add a balancer to balance the water’s pH and hardness. Then, add sanitiser to kill bacteria and germs. After that, you’ll need to use a rapid shock chemical to clear build up of contaminants on a weekly basis. Be sure not to overuse shock as it can lower the pH of your spa too much, causing it to become acidic.
What is the best chemical for a spa?
One of the most popular and commonly used chemicals for sanitising spas is chlorine. This chemical kills any bacteria brought into the spa and clears up cloudy water, making it clear and beautiful.
